Seven months after Mohammed Yunus assumed power in Bangladesh, the pogrom against Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh continues unabated.
There were 174 verified incidents of communal violence against Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh between 21 August and 31 December 2024, according to a report by the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council.

In a report released on 30 January 2025, BHBCUC documents 23 killings/murders; 64 attacks on places of worship, vandalism, looting and arson; nine cases of sexual violence against women; 38 attacks on houses and businesses, looting and arson; 15 cases of false arrest/torture and 25 cases on invasions of homes, land and businesses.

Hasina forced to flee
On 5 August 2024 Bangladesh’s democratically elected Prime Minister Sheik Hasina (pictured above) was forced to flee the country. On 6 August 2024 Bangladeshi President Mohammed Shahabuddin dissolved Parliament. On 8 August 2014, he appointed octogenarian US – based economist Muhammad Yunus (pictured below) as Chief Advisor of an Interim Government.
A number of reports now point the finger at the Americans, through their now discredited agency – USAID as the hidden hand behind the bloodless coup against Hasina.
Since Yunus assumed power, Hindus and other minorities have been subjected to an orchestrated campaign of violence, sexual crimes, looting, false imprisonment and intimidation. Hindu places of worship, Hindu priests and celebration of Hindu festivals have been systematically targeted.
Arnab Sarker shot dead
On 24 January 2025, a 26 year old Hindu Khulna University MBA student – Arnab Kumar Sarker (pictured above) was shot dead while drinking tea at a crossing in Sonadanga, Khulna. He was shot in the head by assailants riding a motorbike. Sarker had been involved in protests for Hindu rights and for the release of Chinmoy Prabhu.
Vicious attacks by armed goons on peacefully protesting minorities have become common place.
Burnt homes and temples, crematorium converted into mosque, victims intimidated into silence

Prominent Hindus continue to be attacked
In early January 2025, the family of Hindu journalist – Sugata Bose was attacked with sharp weapons, injuring three.
On 3 January 2025, Islamists attacked Hindu freedom fighter Shyamlondo Basu and his wife Kakoli Basu with sharp weapons in Madhukhali Upazila, Faridpur district. They were injured and hospitalised.
Intimidation of Hindu lawyers
On 3 January 2025, Islamists directed cries of ‘Burn down the Hindu temple… slap Hindus with a shoe on both cheeks… slap Chinmoy Prabhu on both cheeks with a shoe’ at lawyers for incarcerated Hindu monk – Chinmoy Prabhu.
Sexual violence against Hindu women
In December 2024, a Hindu female leader – Basana Mallick was gang raped by Islamist extremists. She was then poisoned and died in hospital the day after her rape. The TV journalist who reported on this incident was attacked by extremists.
It was reported in December 2024 that a young Bangladeshi Hindu woman – Simu Mahanta (see image below) was abducted, raped and converted to Islam.
Temple attacks
On the evening of 28 December 2024, Islamists broke into the Goldighi Satsang Hindu Temple at Cox’s Bazaar, by cutting a window. They broke the temple’s donation box and stole approximately 350,000 taka, valuable items and the temple’s CCTV.
Hindu Educators forced to resign
In December 2024, Nandan Kumar Barua – the head teacher of Kuwaish Sammilita High School in Hathazari, Chittagong was assaulted and forced to resign.
On 21 December 2024, the Vice Chancellor of Prime Asia University in Dhaka – Dr. Shubhmoy Dutta (see below) was forced to resign.
Hindus framed in false case
Targeting vocal Hindus, laying trumped-up charges against them and goaling them continues. Here, a Hindu mother describes how her student son was brutally beaten up by Islamists and then framed in a false case. Her son remains in goal.
